Chinese political-philosophy PhD candidate Yiyang Zhuge has become the focus of intense online debate after her unusually philosophical interview with director Christopher Nolan went viral. The attention has highlighted both her established influence among Chinese audiences and the sharply contrasting ways English-speaking commentators interpreted her manner, questions and apparent politics.

Zhuge, known online in China as Zhong Shu, interviewed Nolan in Beijing while he was promoting *The Odyssey*, asking questions about civilisation, Greek philosophy and heroism rather than Hollywood. Clips received more than 18 million views after being shared by journalist Geoff Keighley, while her own post gained 6.9 million; responses ranged from praise to accusations that the interview was politically constrained. She has 360,000 followers on Xiaohongshu, more than 940,000 podcast subscribers, and has released over 360 podcast episodes in three years, saying she built her Chinese-language career after a difficult divorce and financial pressures.
