Vollering wins stage to claim Tour lead before final day

Demi Vollering won stage eight of the Tour de France Femmes to take the yellow jersey with one day remaining. Her late attack on the final climb and descent put her eight seconds ahead of defending champion Katarzyna Niewiadoma-Phinney, setting up a close final-stage contest.

The Dutch FDJ-Suez rider completed the 171.9km Sisteron-to-Nice stage in 4hrs 2mins 39secs, finishing 17 seconds ahead of Elisa Longo Borghini and Niewiadoma-Phinney. Marlen Reusser is third overall, 1min 12secs behind, before Sunday’s 99.2km mountain stage around Nice; defending champion Pauline Ferrand-Prevot withdrew through illness.
