Democratic Rep Jill Tokuda won her party's primary in Hawaii's 2nd Congressional District on Saturday, comfortably beating her rivals to secure a third term and set up a general election contest against Republican state Senator Brenton Awa in November. The race drew added attention after one of her Democratic challengers, Kirill Basin, was arrested and charged following a confrontation on a Maui beach in which he reportedly threatened other people.

The 2nd District covers all of Hawaii outside Oahu, along with rural and suburban parts of Oahu itself, and is rated D+12 by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, making it highly likely Democrats will retain the seat in this year's midterms. Tokuda's decisive primary win positions her as the clear favourite heading into her matchup with Awa.
