Luminous, the acclaimed science fiction debut novel by Silvia Park, is officially being adapted into a television series, with development having quietly begun back in 2022, three years before the book's publication. The project's early acquisition underlines how eager studios have become to secure promising literary talent well before release, and the involvement of George R.R. Martin, who backed Park through a writing scholarship, has helped fuel anticipation for the adaptation.

The novel was published by Simon & Schuster in March, with screen rights pre-empted by Media Res, the studio behind titles such as The Morning Show, Pachinko and Extrapolations. Set in a reunified Korea, Luminous explores a near-future world of advanced robotics and artificial intelligence, following human and robot characters whose lives intertwine, including an ill 11-year-old girl and her damaged robot companion. Across its 400 pages, the story examines themes of identity, exploitation and consciousness, addressing issues such as robot trafficking, fighting rings and memory manipulation.
