An Xbox Game With 50% One-Star Reviews Is Still the Top Game With a Million Players in Week 1

Polygon · 4 hours ago

Mistfall Hunter, a fantasy-themed extraction action-RPG from Bellring Games and Skystone Games, has surpassed one million players in its first week despite receiving overwhelmingly negative reviews, with roughly half of its Xbox ratings sitting at one star. The game's availability free via Xbox Game Pass appears to be driving much of its rapid uptake, but its commercial success stands out precisely because it has not been dampened by widespread player dissatisfaction, an unusual outcome in the crowded extraction genre.

The game launched on PC and Xbox Series X/S on 30 July, casting players as "Gyldhunters" tasked with harvesting resources and mending a fractured world, either solo or with friends. It peaked at 44,500 concurrent players on Steam before its developer announced the million-player milestone on social media. Complaints driving the poor reviews include region locking that stops players joining friends abroad, laggy servers disrupting PvP matches, characters getting stuck on the creation screen, and chat spambots. Bellring Games has not directly addressed these criticisms, instead unveiling a roadmap of new seasonal content, weapons, monsters and events, including a teaser for a second season, suggesting the studio is prioritising growth over fixing player grievances for now.
