Kenyon Dixon, a five-time Grammy nominee known for traditional R&B, has released his new solo album "Ego Ruins Everything" independently, marking a deliberate shift towards a more contemporary, hip-hop-influenced sound. In an interview with Billboard, the Los Angeles-born singer-songwriter explained that the 21-track concept album explores modern masculinity and the construction of ego through semi-autobiographical songs, aiming to broaden his artistic identity beyond the smooth, nostalgic R&B that made his name.

The album, out since 24 July, is structured as a narrative journey, using recurring "Running" interludes to link its tracks and guide listeners from familiar emotional territory into more morally complex material, such as the song "FHOMM". It draws on 1990s and early 2000s R&B influences, evoking acts such as Jodeci, while also incorporating a rap-sung cadence and murkier production. Dixon said the project had been in progress before he paused it to complete "Come as You Are", his 2025 collaborative album with Terrace Martin, and that it represents his first full solo release since 2023's "The R&B You Love".
