Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has spoken about his upcoming film Nimrods, a coming-of-age road movie inspired by the band's 1997 album of the same name, which premieres on 14 August. Armstrong, who co-wrote the film with director Lee Kirk and appears in it alongside bandmates Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool, said working with his son Jakob, who wrote songs for the film's fictional band Analog Dogs, helped give the project a contemporary feel by bridging a generational gap between the band's Gen X roots and a Gen Z audience.

In the film, teenager Tommy (Mason Thames) believes he and his band have been invited to open for Green Day on New Year's Eve in Los Angeles, unaware his brother is playing a prank, and sets off cross-country with his bandmates to reach the concert. Kirk said the story grew from anecdotes Armstrong and his bandmates shared about their own early touring days, which were woven into the plot. The soundtrack features classic Green Day tracks alongside original songs, and the cast includes McKenna Grace plus cameos from Fred Armisen, Bobby Lee, Angela Kinsey, Sean Gunn and Jenna Fischer.
