Liverpool have signed Uruguay centre-back Ronald Araujo on a season-long loan from Barcelona, with an option to buy included in the deal. The 27-year-old, who can also play right-back, arrives as Liverpool look to strengthen their defence following the departure of France international Ibrahima Konate to Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer.

Araujo joined Barcelona from Uruguayan side Boston River in 2018 and has made more than 200 appearances for the club, winning three La Liga titles and two Copa del Rey trophies, and was named captain in January. However, he made just 11 league starts last season under manager Hansi Flick as Gerard Martin and Pau Cubarsi became the preferred central defensive pairing, and he took a leave of absence in December to prioritise his mental health after revealing he had suffered anxiety and depression. He remains under contract at Barcelona until 2031, and Liverpool begin their Premier League season away at Newcastle United on Sunday, 23 August.
