Jackie, the famous California bald eagle, dies after weeks of intensive care

BBC Science ·

Jackie, a bald eagle who became a global online sensation via a livestream from her nest in California's Big Bear Valley, died on Monday after weeks of intensive veterinary care. She had been receiving treatment at the Ojai Raptor Center following an attack by other eagles, but her condition worsened despite the efforts of vets and specialists. Her death has affected the large community that followed her life online, with the rescue centre describing caring for her as "an extraordinary privilege."

Jackie hatched in spring 2012 and had been paired with her mate, Shadow, since 2018; their nest livestream, run by the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley, drew hundreds of thousands of subscribers. The Ojai Raptor Center said Jackie had underlying health issues causing anaemia and weight loss, and that her condition deteriorated over her final days despite intensive treatment. Her remains have been passed to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the centre is working with US and state wildlife authorities on a fuller statement covering her treatment and test results.
