Professional Smash Bros. Melee Payer Hungrybox Popped Off So Hard After Winning a Game That He Literally Fainted

IGN · 8 hours ago

Professional Super Smash Bros. Melee player Juan "Hungrybox" Debiedma went viral after fainting while celebrating a hard-fought victory at Supernova, a major tournament held in Baltimore. The 33-year-old, one of the competitive Melee scene's "Five Gods", collapsed moments after defeating Hugh "SluG" Hegarty in a tense 3-2 set to reach the Top 16, sparking widespread concern across the fighting game community when footage of the incident spread online.

Hungrybox later confirmed he was unharmed, saying he had eaten well beforehand, and explained the fainting was likely caused by screaming loudly for an extended period after suddenly standing up, rather than any underlying illness — this was the second time it has happened, following a similar incident in 2021. He also shared that he is partway through a weight-loss journey, having lost 12 pounds since June with plans to lose 30 more, and said a previous medical check found nothing conclusive beyond a slightly elevated red blood cell count. He went on to finish 4th at the tournament after a Losers-side defeat to Zain.
