The programme, produced for US Latino audiences at RCN's studios in Bogotá, opened with host Natalia Téllez pausing to acknowledge the disaster before the celebratory finale began, reflecting the close ties between the show's US production and its Colombian crew and setting.

The earthquake was centred near San José del Palmar, around 149 miles west of Bogotá, and had killed more than 100 people by the time of reporting, according to CNN. Bogotá's mayor, Carlos F. Galán, said the tremor was felt in the capital but caused no major structural damage. Judges David Bisbal, Ximena Sariñana and Ana Bárbara appeared visibly moved during the broadcast, and Téllez sent condolences to affected families before the show crowned its winner.
