Japan kind-of completes its sovereign satnav constellation
Japan successfully deployed the final satellite of its current-generation Quasi-Zenith Satellite System on Tuesday when the H3 rocket placed QZS-7 into orbit. This launch follows a significant setback in December 2025, when adhesive failure caused the loss of QZS-5. With this mission, the rocket demonstrated renewed reliability after two failures across nine total flights, restoring momentum to Japan's independent positioning infrastructure.
Japan developed QZSS to address GPS limitations across its geography, where satellite signals struggle to penetrate mountainous terrain and densely built urban areas. The system uses an inclined geostationary orbit that traces a figure-eight pattern, allowing satellites to remain visible over Japan for extended periods—up to 13 hours at a time. With QZS-7's deployment following QZS-6 in February 2025, Japan now possesses most of the coverage its positioning strategy requires, although the government plans to expand to ten total satellites with three additional launches scheduled for the 2030s.
