Clarkson also claimed his research found no evidence Farage had ever driven a boat, mocking the plan's credibility. Responding at a press conference on Monday 10 August, Farage rejected the criticism, insisting he has "run boats since the mid 1980s". The spat adds a personal, sceptical voice to the wider debate over the feasibility of naval intervention in small boat crossings.
