Cut off by your adult child? Psychology researcher reveals what parents should do next

Fox News · 4 hours ago

Family estrangement has become increasingly common in the United States, but experts say reconciliation between parents and adult children remains possible in most cases, provided both sides are willing to change and find common ground. Texas-based psychology researcher Dr Richard Blake notes that while every relationship differs and there are no guarantees, the majority of estrangements do eventually come to an end. This matters because it offers a hopeful counterpoint to what can feel like an irreversible family rupture, suggesting that periods of estrangement are often temporary rather than permanent.

A 2025 YouGov poll found that 38% of US adults were estranged from at least one close family member, including 16% estranged from a parent and 10% from a child. Among parents who had been cut off by their children, 70% said they would consider reconciling. Research published in the Journal of Marriage and Family also indicates that many parent-child estrangements go through periods of renewed contact over time, reinforcing the view that reconciliation, while not guaranteed, is achievable for many families willing to work at it.
