Remedy Entertainment has announced that Alan Wake 2 has surpassed 3 million copies sold, marking a significant milestone for a game that started slowly at launch. The figure was revealed in the developer-publisher's half-year financial report covering January to June, with the horror shooter reaching the sales mark during the second quarter, following a period in which the title took years to recoup its development costs and only became profitable after passing 2 million sales in early 2025.

Despite the Alan Wake 2 news, Remedy's overall financial report showed declines in revenue, profit and cashflow, which the company attributed to heavy investment in the development and marketing of its upcoming title Control Resonant, alongside continued funding of other projects including Max Payne remakes and an unannounced third game. Control Resonant, due out on 24th September for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, has also boosted sales of the original Control during the second quarter. Remedy's new CEO, who joined in February, recently said he believes both Alan Wake and Control "should have sold more" and that the studio has not yet reached its full commercial potential.

  • Remedy's revenue and profit fell amid Control Resonant investment

Remedy Entertainment is the Finnish studio behind Alan Wake 2, a horror shooter that launched in 2023 to strong reviews but weak initial sales, taking a long time to earn back its development costs. The company both develops and publishes its own games, meaning its financial fortunes are closely tied to how well titles like this perform over the long term rather than just at launch.

Remedy is also known for the Control series and is currently working on several other projects, including remakes of the classic Max Payne games and an unannounced new title. A sequel-expansion called Control Resonant is due out in September, and the studio has a new chief executive who took over earlier this year, both of which are relevant to how Remedy's business is currently being run and reported.

Twice yearly, Remedy publishes financial results covering its sales, revenue and costs, which is how figures such as total copies sold typically come to light. These reports matter because they show whether individual games are actually profitable once development and marketing costs are taken into account, not just how they were received critically.
