Keely Hodgkinson and her two chief rivals for gold, Audrey Werro of Switzerland and Femke Broeders-Bol of the Netherlands, all safely progressed to Thursday's women's 800m semi-finals at the European Athletics Championships. The Olympic champion, who has won the past two European titles, looked in control throughout her heat, setting up a keenly anticipated showdown between the three fastest women in the world this year.

Hodgkinson won her heat in 1:57.28, the quickest of the four heats, while Werro clocked 1:57.83 and Broeders-Bol 1:59.96, with all three appearing untroubled. Werro, who beat Hodgkinson earlier this season with the fastest time in 43 years, has run three of the nine quickest 800m times in history this year, while Hodgkinson continues to chase Jarmila Kratochvilova's 1983 world record after lowering her British record to 1:54.33 in Stockholm in June. Both athletes and pundit Greg Rutherford suggested the strength of the field could push the event towards new records as the championships progress.
