Netflix has acquired two award-winning documentary shorts, "an open field" and "One Last Order," positioning the streamer for potential Oscar contention in the documentary short category. The former, directed by Teboho Edkins, is a deeply personal film exploring the aftermath of the 2019 Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX crash that killed his brother among all 157 people aboard, focusing on the local community's compassion in contrast to Boeing's criticised response. The latter, from directors Lauren DeFilippo and Sam Soko, tells the uplifting story of a beloved Florida fast-food worker's emotional final shift after decades of service.

"an open field" won Best Short Documentary at the 2025 International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), while "One Last Order" has collected several honours including Best Documentary and the Audience Award at the 2026 Aspen Shortsfest, plus audience awards at the Miami and Nantucket film festivals. Edkins, whose father Don produced the film, said having Netflix carry the work to a global audience was "very meaningful" to him. Both films will now be available to Netflix's worldwide subscriber base.
