Developed over time first seen 2 months ago
Netflix has released a trailer for "Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story," the fourth instalment of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan's true-crime anthology series, which dramatises the notorious 1893 axe murders in Fall River, Massachusetts. Ella Beatty stars as Lizzie Borden, a 32-year-old Sunday school teacher accused of killing her father and stepmother with an axe, a case that has gripped true-crime audiences for over a century despite her eventual acquittal. The eight-episode series marks the first "Monster" season to centre on a female killer, following previous instalments on Jeffrey Dahmer, Ed Gein and the Menendez brothers.
Borden was said to have delivered nearly 40 axe blows across both killings before being tried and acquitted by a jury. The cast also includes Rebecca Hall as stepmother Abby Borden and Charlie Hunnam, fresh off an Emmy nomination for playing Ed Gein, as father Andrew Borden, alongside Billie Lourd, Joey Pollari, Sarah Paulson and Jessica Barden. Murphy and Brennan co-created and executive produce the series, with Brennan writing and Max Winkler and Sarah Adina Smith directing; it follows earlier screen adaptations including Lifetime's "The Lizzie Borden Chronicles" with Christina Ricci and the 2018 film "Lizzie," starring Chloë Sevigny and Kristen Stewart.

Netflix's "Monster" is a true-crime anthology series from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, each season dramatising a different notorious criminal case. Earlier instalments covered serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, grave robber and murderer Ed Gein, and the Menendez brothers. The latest season turns to Lizzie Borden, a woman accused of killing her father and stepmother with an axe in Fall River, Massachusetts, in 1892, a case that has intrigued the public for well over a century.
Borden, then 32 and working as a Sunday school teacher, was tried for the murders but acquitted, and the crime has never been definitively solved. The new series stars Ella Beatty as Borden, alongside Rebecca Hall and Charlie Hunnam as her stepmother and father, with Billie Lourd, Joey Pollari, Sarah Paulson and Jessica Barden also featured. It is the first "Monster" season built around a female central figure.
The story matters to entertainment audiences because it extends a high-profile, star-studded franchise built on real historical crimes, and it revives long-running public fascination with one of America's most famous unsolved murder cases.
