Texas-born photographer Avery Norman, a winner of LensCulture’s 2026 critics’ choice award, presents a series examining youth, girlhood and American identity. The images combine staged, intimate and everyday moments to explore memory, desire and selfhood, with an emphasis on the ways personal experience becomes visual mythology.

Norman’s photographs include her mother’s preserved hair braided in her grandparents’ living room, friends smoking in Georgia and climbing a tree in thrifted clothes, and a self-portrait involving guns in east Texas. Other scenes feature roadkill in upstate New York, an hourly motel, a friend’s tattoo of a French poem, and Caddo Lake on the Texas–Louisiana border; LensCulture editor Jim Casper praised the series’ controlled detail and sense of mystery.
