Spotify announces new AI-labelling system for AI-generated artists and content
Spotify will introduce an “AI Persona” badge from mid-September to identify profiles representing AI-generated artists, aiming to make it easier for listeners to distinguish them from human performers. The change matters because AI-generated music is becoming increasingly common on streaming services, raising concerns about transparency, impersonation and how such material is promoted.
The badge will appear on artist pages, search results and playlist track rows, while AI Persona music will generally be excluded from Spotify’s editorial and algorithmic recommendations unless a user already follows such profiles. Artists can self-disclose through Spotify for Artists from 12 August, but Spotify will also review suspected undisclosed accounts; reporting tools for listeners are due later this year. The system labels whether a profile is human rather than how music was made, acknowledging that human artists may also use AI tools.
- Spotify will label AI-generated artist profiles from September.
- AI Persona tracks will largely lose recommendation placement.
- The scheme targets artist identity, not AI-assisted production.
