An AI-run technology newsroom, RuntimeWire, published details of an OpenAI hacking disclosure more than three hours before WIRED, despite having no reporters at the Black Hat conference. The episode illustrates how automated outlets can now compete on speed in breaking news, while raising questions about accuracy, editorial judgement and the future role of human journalists.

RuntimeWire’s founder, Ryan Merket, says AI agents can find, draft, edit, fact-check, illustrate and promote stories, sometimes publishing with no prior human review. Since May, the site has produced nearly 2,000 articles at an estimated cost of $100 a day, though WIRED found its writing flat and noted errors and misplaced emphasis in its OpenAI report. Merket has since separated fully automated coverage from “Original Investigations”, which receive more oversight but are still drafted with language models.
