‘It is just smelling football’: Tielemans says adjusting to life at United has come naturally
Youri Tielemans says he has settled naturally into Michael Carrick’s Manchester United system after joining from Aston Villa for £35m. The experienced Belgian midfielder believes Carrick’s emphasis on possession, pressing and defensive structure is logical, and says the team must combine those principles with attacking freedom.
The 29-year-old made his United debut in a 1-1 pre-season draw against Paris Saint-Germain after spending 10 days on the club’s tour. He has made 579 senior appearances since debuting for Anderlecht at 16, and despite injury-limited league starts last season and a recent hamstring issue, he does not believe he requires regular rest; United triggered his release clause and faced no known competition for his signing.
