Sheffield City Council is progressing plans to regenerate the former Sheffield Ski Village at Parkwood Springs, which has stood derelict since a fire forced its closure in 2012. The project matters because it could bring new outdoor leisure facilities and improved public access to a long-neglected area close to the city centre.

The council has received £19.4m in government funding for a new access road, better walking and cycling routes, public-realm works, Japanese knotweed treatment, and country-park improvements including mountain-bike trails and paths. It is also preparing an agreement with New Zealand developer Skyline, enabling it to draw up a masterplan before negotiations over developing and leasing the site begin; the ski village had operated from 1988.
