Amazon is withdrawing from the massively multiplayer online game market, transferring responsibility for the western live operations of Throne and Liberty and Lost Ark to other companies. The move completes a broader retreat from first-party AAA MMO development and signals a shift towards cloud gaming, social games and titles linked to Amazon’s wider entertainment franchises.

FirstSpark Games and NC will take over Throne and Liberty in the fourth quarter of 2026, while Smilegate will assume control of Lost Ark in early 2027. Amazon had already stopped new content updates for New World: Aeternum; it was removed from sale in January and is scheduled to close on 31 January 2027. The company’s revised games strategy prioritises Luna, television-based party games and projects associated with franchises such as James Bond and Tomb Raider.
