The review argues that it offers a high-quality, highly addictive role-playing experience, but stresses that players must be prepared for a very large time commitment and uneven early storytelling.

The game follows the player character in Eorzea amid renewed conflict with the Garlean Empire and a supernatural mission involving six crystals, beginning the Hydaelyn-Zodiark Saga. Completing that four-part story alone takes at least 200 hours with little side content, while the base game’s roughly 60-hour narrative can feel slow and exposition-heavy, often relying on unvoiced NPC dialogue; later emotional moments and plot pay-offs are said to reward persistence. Its MMO structure includes exploration, jobs, levelling, side quests, minigames and dungeons, with the main quest gradually introducing key systems.
