Sam Barlow’s next game, Precognition, is a sci-fi horror mystery in which players search through video clips of a protagonist’s possible future and alter events by deciding which moments she remembers. It matters because it develops the archive-based investigative style of Her Story and Immortality into a more systemic mechanic centred on cause, effect and competing futures.

The game is due in spring 2028 from Half Mermaid and Kinetic Publishing, and is being co-written with horror filmmaker Brandon Cronenberg. Its protagonist, Diana, is a former child prodigy with a photographic memory who receives an experimental memory implant; unlike other subjects, she retains visions of the future and can commit selected moments to memory. Each choice changes the timeline and produces new visions, allowing players to build an inventory of alternate futures to investigate and influence.

  • Precognition lets players alter the future through selected recorded memories.
  • Sam Barlow is co-writing the sci-fi horror with Brandon Cronenberg.
  • The game is scheduled for release in spring 2028.

Sam Barlow is a video game writer and director known for mysteries built around searching through recordings. His earlier games, including Her Story and Immortality, ask players to piece together a story by finding and comparing clips rather than following a conventional linear plot.

Precognition uses a similar approach in a science-fiction horror setting. Players examine footage from possible futures involving Diana, a woman whose experimental implant gives her unusual memories of events that have not yet happened, then choose which moments she keeps in mind.

Brandon Cronenberg is a filmmaker associated with unsettling science-fiction and body horror, and is co-writing the game. The project brings together Barlow’s archive-style investigation with choices designed to alter later events, making the relationship between memory, evidence and different possible outcomes central to the game.
