The writers of Spider-Man: Brand New Day say Jean Grey is not responsible for any deaths in the film, despite causing widespread disruption while using her psychic abilities to control others. Their comments address debate over a scene involving a man apparently struck by a bus, and underline Marvel’s attempt to introduce Jean as both a credible threat and a character capable of redemption.

Jean, played by Sadie Sink, is revealed as the first member of the MCU’s new X-Men team and is searching for her sister Sara, who is being held by Damage Control for her powers. Writers Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna said they deliberately concealed Jean’s identity so audiences would experience events alongside Peter Parker. The film has taken $1.68 billion worldwide since its 31 July release and has surpassed Avengers: Endgame’s domestic first-week record.
