In 2008, Iraqi journalist Muntadhar al-Zaidi hurled his shoes at then US President George W Bush during a Baghdad press conference, shouting "This is a farewell kiss from the Iraqi people, you dog!" Bush ducked and avoided being struck, but the incident became a defining image of anger over the US-led invasion of Iraq and inspired copycat shoe-throwing protests around the world, from India to Cambridge University.
