Twitch has announced plans to train generative AI models using livestreams on its platform, with the setting enabled by default and creators required to opt out. The decision has prompted strong opposition from streamers, who argue that training should require explicit permission; it matters because it raises concerns about creator control, consent and how major platforms use user-generated content for AI development.

During a live Q&A, Twitch chief product officer Mike Minton said the company chose opt-out because “nobody would opt in”, while arguing that users’ opt-out requests would still be respected. Requests to make the feature optional are the most popular on Twitch’s UserVoice page, and the backlash has continued despite some appreciation for Minton’s candour; the policy may face further pressure as Twitch competes with other livestreaming platforms.
