Agent 64: Spies Never Die review – licence to kill time like the 90s never ended

The Guardian · 3 hours ago

Agent 64: Spies Never Die is a deliberately retro first-person shooter that closely imitates the look, feel and design of GoldenEye 007 and Perfect Dark. The reviewer finds its nostalgia appealing, particularly in its fast-paced action and split-screen multiplayer, but says its outdated controls and level design can make it frustrating.

Developed largely by one person, Replicant D6, the PC game uses low-budget visuals, subtitles instead of voice acting, blocky environments and features such as Big Head mode. Its short missions encourage replaying them for fast completion times, while solo, co-op and local deathmatch modes provide variety; however, confusing corridors, dead ends and restarting levels after death reflect the drawbacks of its 1990s inspirations.

  • A fond but flawed GoldenEye-style retro shooter.
  • Split-screen multiplayer is its strongest feature.
  • Old-fashioned controls and levels frustrate.
