Bangladesh took control of the opening day of the first Test against Australia in Darwin, despite Steve Smith receiving a controversial reprieve when Snicko showed no edge after he appeared to nick Ebadot Hossain. Smith later admitted he felt he had made contact, but his 71 was one of few significant Australian contributions as Bangladesh’s bowlers dismissed the hosts for 198. The tourists then reached 96-1 by close, leaving them well placed in a match that could challenge Australia’s unbeaten home Test record against Bangladesh.

Fast bowler Hasan Mahmud claimed career-best figures of 6-55, while Australia lost their final five wickets for 46 after recovering to 152-5. Bangladesh lost opener Shadman Islam but Tanzid Hasan Tamim was unbeaten on 32 alongside Mominul Haque on 35, with the visitors 102 runs behind. Australia have never lost a home Test to Bangladesh and this is the first match of a two-Test series.
