Compass, a think tank allied with supporters of Prime Minister Andy Burnham, has criticised Labour’s immigration approach as an “abject failure” morally and electorally. Its forthcoming report argues Labour should make a positive, principled case for immigration and accept responsibility for some people displaced by war and climate change, rather than adopt policies associated with Reform UK and the Conservatives.

The report is one of 100 proposals Compass says the government should pursue in its first 100 days. Burnham nevertheless retained Shabana Mahmood as home secretary and has pledged tougher action against Channel-crossing gangs after a record 230 people arrived in one boat; Labour has recently moved ahead of Reform in some polls, with a YouGov survey placing it on 24% against Reform’s 22%.
