Documentary First They Came For My College, about Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s 2023 reshaping of New College of Florida, will receive a limited US theatrical release beginning in September. The film presents the changes as a politically driven takeover and follows staff and students who resisted them, making it a contribution to the wider debate over political influence, censorship and diversity policies in higher education.

Directed by Patrick Bresnan, the film opens on 17 September in Gainesville and on 25 September in New York, before playing in more than 30 markets. It premiered at the True/False festival and focuses on the appointment of six conservative trustees, including Christopher Rufo and Matthew Spalding; the filmmakers say the changes affected LGBTQ+ students, diversity and inclusion initiatives, and dissent on campus.
