2K has launched Small Axe Studios, a new AAA development studio intended to create its “next blockbuster sports franchise”. The announcement matters because signs suggest the project could be a football game positioned to compete with EA Sports FC, potentially expanding 2K’s presence in major sports gaming.

2K has not confirmed which sport the new title will cover, but its announcement image appears to include a mock football badge. Small Axe grew out of 2K Sports Lab, announced in 2023, and is led by Aaron McHardy, who previously worked on EA’s FIFA series; 2K already publishes NBA 2K, WWE 2K and PGA Tour 2K.
