China’s $300M Sleeper Hit ‘Dear You’ Unveils U.S. Trailer Ahead of September Release

The Hollywood Reporter · 3 hours ago

China’s unexpected box-office hit Dear You will open in selected North American cinemas on 4 September through Well Go USA, following the release of its first US trailer. The family drama matters because it turned a modest $2 million production into one of China’s biggest films of 2026, demonstrating the commercial reach of strong word of mouth and locally rooted storytelling.

Directed and co-written by Lan Hongchun, the Teochew-language film follows a grandson searching Thailand for his long-absent grandfather and uncovering the truth behind decades of letters and money sent to his grandmother. It earned nearly $300 million after opening to only $550,000 in China, rose to number one within ten days and held the position for more than 20 days; its 9.3 Douban rating is reportedly the highest for a Chinese release in over a decade.
