New Sci-Fi Thriller From Godzilla Director Officially Drops in 3 Weeks

Polygon · 3 hours ago

Adam Wingard’s sci-fi action thriller Onslaught is due to be released in three weeks, marking the director’s move away from the recent Godzilla and Kong films towards the horror-action style of his earlier work. The film stars Adria Arjona as a military sniper and single mother whose family is targeted by escaped super soldiers, and may share a fictional universe with Wingard’s 2014 film The Guest.

Arjona’s character, Celeste, lives in a trailer park with her young daughter while confronting the threat from a secret military facility. The cast also includes Dan Stevens, Rebecca Hall, Michael Biehn and several UFC fighters; Wingard has said the film is set in the same town as The Guest, with related covert experiments. Onslaught is produced by A24, written by Simon Barrett and has a 92-minute runtime.

Adam Wingard is an American film-maker known for mixing horror, action and science fiction. He directed the recent Godzilla vs. Kong films, but first built his reputation with lower-budget thrillers including The Guest, a 2014 film about a mysterious former soldier with ties to a secret military programme.

Onslaught returns to that earlier kind of story, centring on Celeste, a military sniper and mother who must protect her family. The threat comes from super soldiers linked to a hidden military facility, bringing together ideas of covert experiments, combat and survival.

The film is being released by A24, a company known for backing independent and genre films, and was written by Simon Barrett, Wingard’s frequent collaborator. Its connection to The Guest means viewers familiar with that film may recognise parts of the setting and the wider backstory, though the new film has its own characters and plot.
