Collider · 3 hours ago

The Mandalorian and Grogu will begin streaming on Disney+ on 2 September, Collider reports in an exclusive announcement with Lucasfilm. The release extends the film’s journey from the cinema to home viewing and marks Star Wars’ return to a major theatrical-to-streaming rollout after the franchise’s years of emphasis on Disney+ series.

Set after the first three seasons of The Mandalorian, the film reunites Pedro Pascal, Brendan Wayne and Lateef Crowder as Din Djarin/The Mandalorian. It reportedly earned nearly $350 million worldwide, placing it among the year’s highest-grossing films, before reaching digital platforms several weeks ago and entering the top ten there; its cast also includes Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White and Martin Scorsese in voice roles.

The Mandalorian is a Star Wars story centred on Din Djarin, a masked bounty hunter from a warrior culture, and Grogu, a young, Force-sensitive child. Their relationship became widely known through the Disney+ series, which began in 2019 and takes place after the fall of the Empire.

Star Wars is a long-running science-fiction franchise set in a fictional galaxy, involving rival political and military powers as well as people who can use the Force, an energy field with mystical qualities. Disney owns Lucasfilm, the company behind Star Wars, and has expanded the franchise through cinema releases and streaming programmes.

The film continues the story after the television series’ first three seasons. Its move from cinemas and digital rental or purchase services to Disney+ follows the common pattern for major studio films, while also linking the franchise’s streaming audience with its theatrical releases.
