Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty in federal court to two stalking charges connected to the killing of UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson, and told the judge that he had shot Thompson. The plea is significant because it includes an admission that Thompson died, but it does not settle the separate New York state murder case, which is due to go to trial next month.

Mangione, 28, said chronic pain from a broken back preceded his actions. He told the court he posed as an investor managing $50 billion to obtain details of a UnitedHealthcare conference, then travelled to New York and used a 3D-printed, silenced 9mm handgun to shoot Thompson, 50, outside a Midtown hotel on 4 December 2024. The federal stalking offences carry a maximum sentence of life imprisonment; federal murder charges had previously been dropped.

  • Mangione admitted shooting UnitedHealthcare chief executive Brian Thompson.
  • He pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges.
  • A separate state murder trial remains pending.

Brian Thompson was the chief executive of UnitedHealth Group, one of the largest health insurance companies in the United States. He was shot dead in New York in December 2024, prompting a major police investigation and widespread attention.

Luigi Mangione is accused of carrying out the killing and faces separate criminal cases over it. Prosecutors say he had followed and targeted Thompson in advance, including by presenting himself as an investor to gain access or information.

Stalking is a separate offence from murder, involving allegations of persistent monitoring or pursuit. A guilty plea to a stalking charge would deal only with that allegation; the murder accusation would still have to be decided through the court process.
