Hulu has released an R-rated director’s cut of the 2008 X-Files spin-off film, restoring scenes creator Chris Carter says were removed to secure a PG-13 certificate. Retitled The X-Files: I Want to Believe–Vrach Frankenshteyn, it is intended to realise Carter’s original, more overtly horrific vision as interest grows in Ryan Coogler’s forthcoming Hulu reboot.

The revised film largely retains the original story, in which Mulder and Scully return to investigate abductions linked to a disgraced priest claiming psychic visions. The 2008 release received mixed reviews but earned $68 million from a $30 million budget, and its continued appeal helped lead to the limited-run television revival in 2016 and 2018.
