Disney has confirmed that its forthcoming “Kingdom Hearts” anime will air on Disney Channel as well as Disney+, broadening the adaptation’s distribution beyond streaming. The announcement came at Disney’s D23 event, where a first-look image appeared to show protagonist Sora and his Keyblade. No release date, cast, animation studio or detailed plot information has been announced; the franchise began in 2002, spans more than a dozen games and has sold over 39 million units worldwide, while “Kingdom Hearts IV” is expected in late 2027.

Kingdom Hearts is a long-running role-playing video game series created by Square Enix in partnership with Disney. It follows Sora, a teenage boy who travels between worlds inspired by Disney films with companions including Donald Duck and Goofy.
The games combine original characters and stories with settings, music and figures drawn from Disney and, in some titles, other Square Enix games. Their plot centres on Sora’s efforts to reunite with his friends and confront enemies linked to darkness and lost hearts.
The first game was released in 2002 and the franchise has since appeared on several consoles and handheld devices. It has built an international following, and a television adaptation would bring its characters and fictional worlds to viewers who may not know the games.
