Rugby Drought Delay as Cyclist Dies and Roblox Faces Inquiry

England’s grass-roots rugby season was delayed after the Rugby Football Union concluded that drought-hardened pitches posed an increased injury risk. National-league fixtures below the Premiership and Championship had been due to begin on 5 September, but the RFU issued a blanket direction postponing the start until the week commencing 21 September following regional consultation. The decision affected clubs across England, while some pre-season matches were also cancelled or rearranged because dry, uneven surfaces were considered unsuitable for full-contact play.
The same news cycle was marked by the death of 19-year-old British cyclist Finlay Tarling during stage eight of the Volta a Portugal, between Melgaço and Fafe. Race organisers neutralised the stage, cancelled its podium ceremony and Tarling’s NSN Development Team subsequently withdrew from the remaining stages; Portuguese authorities were examining the collision involving a vehicle. Separately, the US Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism opened an inquiry into child safety on Roblox. Senators Josh Hawley and Dick Durbin requested records and information concerning alleged exploitation, abuse, bullying and financial exploitation on the platform by 31 August, while Roblox said it would share information about its safety work.
