Stripe is reportedly in talks to buy PayPal

Engadget ·

Stripe and private equity firm Advent International are reportedly negotiating to buy PayPal, following an unsuccessful July offer. A deal could create one of the world’s largest online payments companies, but discussions may still fail and no agreement has been confirmed.

The reported July bid of $60.50 per share valued PayPal at $53 billion, compared with roughly $40 billion at the time and a much higher pandemic-era peak. Reuters previously reported that Stripe and Advent would own PayPal equally without breaking it up; together they could process about $3.7 trillion annually, while PayPal’s new chief executive Enrique Lores is pursuing a turnaround through separate checkout, Venmo, and payments-and-crypto units.

In short

  • Stripe and Advent are reportedly discussing a higher bid for PayPal.
  • July’s reported offer valued PayPal at $53 billion.
  • A merger could combine Stripe with Venmo, checkout and crypto services.

Steelman: both sides, in good faith

The strongest fair case each way — we don't pick a winner.

The case for

A merger could unlock significant synergies between complementary payment platforms and create a stronger competitor to challenge entrenched giants like Visa and Mastercard. By combining Stripe's merchant services with PayPal's consumer base and Venmo, the combined entity could innovate faster, offer integrated services across checkout and peer-to-peer payments, and reduce duplicative costs whilst delivering shareholder value to PayPal investors after years of underperformance.

The case against

Consolidating two major independent payment processors raises serious competition concerns in an already concentrated market dominated by card networks. The deal could reduce innovation incentives, limit consumer choice, and risk higher merchant fees that ultimately harm businesses and customers. PayPal's new leadership is pursuing a credible standalone turnaround strategy with focused business units, suggesting the company has a viable path to recovery without requiring acquisition by private equity.

Explained simply

PayPal is an online payments company that lets people and businesses send money and pay for purchases. Its services include checkout tools for online shops and Venmo, a popular money transfer app in the United States. Stripe provides payment technology used by businesses to accept payments online.

Stripe and private equity firm Advent International have been linked to an earlier offer that valued PayPal at $53 billion. PayPal is led by chief executive Enrique Lores, who is trying to improve the company’s performance across its different services. A purchase could combine two large payments businesses, with the reported firms potentially handling trillions of dollars in transactions each year.
