A free sun cream scheme has been launched in Crookes, Sheffield, after local campaigner Charlotte Killeya, who has stage four melanoma, called for better access to sun protection. Dispensers will be available in participating shops, cafés and pubs throughout August, aiming both to help people who cannot afford sun cream and to raise awareness of skin cancer prevention.

Killeya, diagnosed in 2020 after finding melanoma on her shoulder, said sun cream should be treated as an essential product and warned that sunburn can occur even on cloudy days. Organised by resident Vanessa Senger and funded through the Crookes and Crosspool ward budget, the project may expand elsewhere in Sheffield next year; Melanoma Focus says almost nine in 10 melanoma cases could be prevented through sun protection and avoiding sunbeds.
