Germany’s Johannes Liebmann and the United States’ Kate Douglass set swimming world records on the same day, producing standout performances in Paris and California. Liebmann’s breakthrough in the 1,500m freestyle was particularly significant because he became the first swimmer to finish the event in under 14 minutes 30 seconds, while Douglass reclaimed the women’s 50m freestyle record.

The 19-year-old Liebmann won his first international gold at the European Aquatics Championships in 14 minutes 26.79 seconds, cutting 3.88 seconds from Bobby Finke’s Olympic record set in Paris in 2024. Douglass, 24, swam 23.49 seconds in the Pan Pacific Championships heats, improving on her own June record of 23.59 and surpassing Gretchen Walsh’s 23.55 mark set nine days later.
