Variety hosted its annual Showrunners Breakfast on 14 August at Oleander at The Sun Rose Hotel in West Hollywood, bringing together leading television producers and creatives, several of whom feature in Variety's 2026 Showrunners Impact Report. The event, moderated by Variety's executive TV editor Michael Schneider, offered a rare public glimpse into the working lives of showrunners as they discussed network notes, the evolving structure of writers' rooms and the growing influence of AI on the industry.

Panellists included Jonathan Tropper of "Your Friends & Neighbors," Debora Cahn of "The Diplomat," Ashley Nicole Black of "Shrinking," and Dan Harmon of "Rick and Morty," among others from shows such as "Welcome to Wrexham." Tropper spoke about distinguishing helpful network notes from those that overreach into writing or directing, while Black discussed the pressure of following up "Shrinking's" 10 Emmy nominations for its third season and Cahn reflected on the persistent creative anxiety after four seasons of "The Diplomat." The breakfast also featured an emotional moment as Ryan Murphy accepted the Norman Lear Award, recognising his impact on the television industry.
