Deadline · 3 hours ago

Phyllida Law, the veteran Scottish actor and mother of Emma and Sophie Thompson, has died at the age of 94. Her personal manager confirmed she passed away peacefully at home on 27 July, surrounded by her family, though no cause or location of death was given. Her death marks the loss of a performer whose career spanned more than six decades and over 140 credits across television, film and stage.

Born in Glasgow in 1932, Law trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, where she met and later married fellow actor Eric Thompson. She built a long British television career from the late 1950s onwards and appeared on stage alongside Alec Guinness, before frequently co-starring with daughter Emma Thompson in films including Peter's Friends, Much Ado About Nothing and the award-winning The Winter Guest. Later credits included The Time Machine, Miss Potter and Albert Nobbs, and she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2014.
