Oscars Budget, ‘Engaging’ With AI and Hot Memorabilia: Inside the Academy’s Annual All-Members Meeting (EXCLUSIVE)

Variety · 3 hours ago

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) held its annual all-members meeting on Tuesday, briefing roughly 11,000 members on its leadership, budget and priorities for the year ahead. Led by Academy president Lynette Howell Taylor and chief executive Bill Kramer, the hour-long virtual session covered the organisation's $187 million budget, discussions around artificial intelligence, and hopes that the Oscars could reach up to two billion viewers once the ceremony moves to YouTube in 2029. The meeting underscores the Academy's efforts to modernise its finances and broadcast reach as it navigates a shifting media landscape.

The 2027 fiscal year budget, covering July 2026 to June 2027, allocates 23% to awards-related expenses such as the Oscars ceremony and associated events, 19% to foundation operations including museum exhibitions and education programmes, 12% to Academy programmes, 5% to bond repayment, and 41% to personnel costs. Kramer highlighted progress in diversifying revenue beyond the Oscars broadcast, noting that the Academy 100 campaign has raised $308 million of its $500 million target, with backing from Netflix, Sony, NBCUniversal, Apple and luxury brands including Chanel and Dior. Separately, the Oscars' 2029 switch from ABC to YouTube will see the ceremony relocate from the 3,400-seat Dolby Theatre to the larger 7,000-seat Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles, under a new deal with AEG, in a move aimed at widening ticket access for members.

  • AMPAS set a $187 million budget for 2027 at its annual meeting.
  • Oscars ceremony moves from ABC to YouTube from 2029, targeting 2 billion viewers.
  • New Peacock Theater venue nearly doubles seating capacity from the Dolby Theatre.
