March, May and more: footballers scoring in months that match their names | The Knowledge
This is an instalment of the Guardian's football trivia column, The Knowledge, answering a reader's question about footballers who have scored goals in the calendar month matching their surname (inspired by Birmingham City's August Priske scoring on 8 August). Readers submitted examples spanning almost every month of the year, drawing on players from English and foreign-language month names alike, including cases where the surname is a direct translation such as "März" for March or "Janvier" for January.
Highlights include Heiko März scoring twice in March 1993 for Hansa Rostock, Solly March netting FA Cup quarter-final goals for Brighton in March 2019 and 2023, David May opening the scoring for Manchester United's title-clinching win in May 1996, and April Heinrichs scoring for the USA on 1 April 1991. Other examples cited include Nicolas Janvier (January 2016), Jayden Fevrier (February 2024), Edigar Junio (June 2019), and three separate players named Julio scoring in July across different competitions.
