Magic’s Most Popular Commander Ever Does More Than Its Designers Intended

Polygon · 2 hours ago

Y'shtola, Night's Blessed, a card from Magic: The Gathering's Final Fantasy 14 Commander deck, has become the most popular Commander in the game's history, prompting its designers to reflect on whether they made her too powerful. Introduced in June 2025, the card reliably generates extra cards, life and damage for its controller, and its designers, Daniel Holt and Gavin Verhey, told Polygon that some of her mechanics work even more strongly than intended, including an ability that can trigger from combat between opponents that has nothing to do with her controller.

Y'shtola is a four-mana 2/4 with vigilance that deals damage and gains life whenever her controller casts a qualifying noncreature spell, and draws a card at the end of any turn in which a player loses at least four life — a threshold Holt admits was "slightly too easy to clear". The card overtook The Ur-Dragon on EDHREC as the site's most popular Commander earlier this month, roughly 14 months after the Final Fantasy crossover set launched, and passed 50,000 registered decks within a week of taking the top spot. Designers cited her accessibility, popularity of the Final Fantasy character, and her flexible, non-restrictive deckbuilding engine as reasons for her runaway success.
