Larry David Ended Friendship With Trump Lawyer Alan Dershowitz Because ‘He Made a Deal With the Devil. Literally. He Only Has Himself to Blame’

Variety ·

Larry David has revealed why he ended his friendship with lawyer Alan Dershowitz, telling The Atlantic that Dershowitz "made a deal with the devil" by joining Donald Trump's legal defence team during his first impeachment trial in 2020. The comedian and "Curb Your Enthusiasm" creator's remarks confirm and expand on a public falling-out that began with a heated confrontation on Martha's Vineyard in 2021, offering fresh insight into how the pair's once-close relationship collapsed over politics.

The rift became public knowledge after a 2021 altercation in which David called Dershowitz "disgusting" to his face during a chance encounter at a shop; Dershowitz, who has also represented Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein, later recounted the incident to The New Yorker in 2022. In the new Atlantic profile, published on 18 August, Dershowitz said David "screams and yells" at him and criticised him for not reaching out when his son Elon died of a stroke last year, aged 64. David admitted he regretted not contacting Dershowitz over his son's death but maintained his stance on the friendship, saying Dershowitz "only has himself to blame" for the estrangement.
